Micro Switch and Its Working Principal

Micro Switch

It is a small device and very sensitive which require minimum effort  to activate. It  is generally use as safety device and switch panel. It reliable ,low cost and can open up a circuit when needed. It is also known as Miniature Snap Action Switch. It having three pole ,One is normally open (NO),second pole is normally close(NC) and third is common so it also can said SPDT switch.

Micro Switch Types

  • Standard Straight Lever
  • Long Straight Lever
  • Extended Straight Lever
  • Standard Simulated Roller Lever
  • Small Simulated Roller Lever
  • Pin Plunger
  • Roller Lever

Construction Of Micro Switch

A Micro Switch requires parts are
  •  Terminals
  •  Moving Arm
  •  Moving Piece
  •  Plunger
  •  Contact
  •  Case
Parts of micro switch

Terminals

A Micro Switch having three Terminals which is NO,NC and C.
NO means Normally open. Here, NO terminal specifies the contact of the switch is open . So, if you connect it within a circuit, there is no flow of current in the circuit.
NC terminal is normally close terminal.  The contacts of the switch  in closed condition. So it allows the flow of current throughout the circuit. And C Terminal is common terminal.

 Moving Arm

The Moving arm is a lever in a switch, used to activate & operate the micro switch.

Moving Piece

The moving piece used to apply the operating power to the contacts.

Plunger

The plunger is also known as an actuator which is one type of mechanical parts, used to control a circuit manually by turning ON & OFF.

Contact

The contact in a switch is an electrically conductive material piece, normally metal. The main function of this part is to make or break electrical continuity

Case

A Micro Switch all parts are assembled on it and the case protect from external force.

Working Principal

That once this switch lever touches an object, then contacts will change their position. So this switch working principle mainly includes the following.

When you press the lever of the switch, then the circuit’s normally closed Terminal will be opened, and the normally opened Terminal will be closed. Similarly, when you open the lever of the switch then the circuit’s normally close or NC Terminal will carry current whereas normally open or NO Terminal circuit can insulate electrically.

FAQ

Where are micro switches used?
Panel doors to sense an 'open' or 'closed' state, in vending machines to detect the dropping of coins, in printers and photocopiers, franking machines etc.
What is the difference between limit switch and microswitch?
A microswitch has two limit switches operating together and sharing a common terminal. One limit switch is normally open and the other is normally closed. To be technically correct, the switch configuration is Single Pole Double Throw, or commonly referred to as SPDT. Micro Switch  has less contact gap but Limit Switch has a high contact  gap.
Why do micro switches fail?
The most common reason is an electro-mechanical failure,  When the switch's contacts become worn down by heat, moisture, and other factors. Electrical failures also happen if too much current flows through a circuit that uses microswitches in its design.
Which is commonly called a microswitch?
A Micro Switch is commonly called as a Miniature Snap-action Switch. also sometimes called over center mechanism.
