What is a Pulse Oximeter?

 Pulse Oximeter

It is a small device which easily measure  oxygen saturation level of blood in human body. The pulse oximeter will be able to tell us oxygen saturation levels along with our heart rate. It is a noninvasive procedure to measure the oxygen saturation level of human body. It is a clip type device which used on finger or ear lobe. Pulse oximetry works on the principle of spectral analysis for measurement of oxygen saturation.

Construction of Pulse Oximeter

There are various components used in Pulse oximeter such as
  1. Red Led
  2. Infrared Led
  3. Photo diode
  4. Microprocessor
  5. Display
  6. Power source

How pulse oximeter work

Red Led and Infrared Led, emitted light rays and transmit through the tissue then the photo diode receive or detect the light rays and convert in electrical signal  and this signal goes to the microprocessor. The microprocessor unit analysis and display it.

RED LED and IR LED

Pulse Oximeter Having two LEDs for the purpose of light rays generation. These LEDs rating are Red LED  660nm and Infrared LED 910nm wavelengths.

Photo Diode

The photodiode detects the light transmitted through both pulsatile and non-pulsatile tissues. The photodiode measures the amount of light absorbed at each wavelength, from which the amount of oxygenated hemoglobin and deoxygenated hemoglobin is calculated by a microprocessor and displayed on the monitor.

Microprocessor

In this unit do the calculation and activation of alarm for if low oxygen saturation level of human body
And also measure pulse rate of body.
